Does anyone have any suggestions on the best dry dog food for German Shepherds? The current food I use has corn in it which makes her itchy I was very interested in Eukanuba but that also has corn in it. I need something that will keep her at a good weight as well because unlike most shepherds she is very stocky so she gains weight more rapidly. Does anyone use Canin Royal? I hear that is one of the best but its also $50 for only a 36lb bag. If anyone has any suggestions I would really appreciate it.

Hi Beth As a breeder of working German Shepherds all mine are on Breed specific Eukanuba German Shepherd. they all have proper weight, excellent coat, great energy, less cleanup in yard. have you had your dog to the vet to check for allergies? Good luck

hi tom have always stawyed away from hi branded dog food as i have found that they are over priced and over raeted. over the years i have found with my dogs have not done well as most of the food is bound with hi weat content and it depens were in the mix ur bag is.
i use a dog food called pedro which is hi in oils which helps the dogs skin. and i use a mix of natural foods to builed up there stomach emuine stistum. a dog that is working needs raw meat to get the stomach acid going pasta tined srdines in oil. meat that i would give my dogs , deer meat on the bone ounce no dry food, cow hart choped liver twice a mounth. tip for when dog gets upset stomach rain wather only it's cleaner, starve dog for 24hrs then give him corne flour 1/2 cup made with wather and add in some digestive biscuits three time a day for two / three days till stools become better then slowly back on to normal food little but offten

Thanks so much for all the helpful info. Canin Royal seems to be the top pick so I am definitely going to give that a try.

Thanks again.

Hi Beth, I use about 1/3 Royal Canin mixed with two other feeds at a ration of 1/3 - 1/3- 1/3. Even when I fed it alone it was a good food. If you're looking for something without corn, wheat or beet pulp try FROMM Family Adult Gold. Its base protein is Fresh duck, Chicken, Lamb, Whole Eggs and Wisconson Cheese. The grain content is Brown rice, Pearled barley, and Oatmeal. Haven't tried it yet, but just found it and am looking into it. Their family raised Ranch fox for years and developed the first Distemper vacine, so they have been dealing with canids for a long time. They started FROMM LABORATORIES. Check @ www.frommfamily.com

Just to add, I found the Royal Canin helped me maintain Xena's weight better than the ProPlan - which puts weight on far too easily, if you're not careful.

Hi Beth. I used Royal Canin German Shepherd 24 for a few years. I found it excellent. Good protein release, solid stools etc. Appeared to be enjoyed by my dog, although she does have a good appetite, so that's no real recommendation. In all seriousness, I've never heard anything bad about Royal Canin. I only changed brands to Purina ProPlan athletic because I could get a better deal and also because the Purina is thought of even better than the Royal Canin.
I hope that helps.
