I worked with a client who had a Dogo. Freakin' awesome dog. Pro's- very powerful, large, extremely tough. Cons- too powerful, so strong they are hard to control with traditional training techniques and this also goes to their toughness because the…

To pop or not to pop, that is the question.......

I don't know about you guys but I am a gadget cop. I'm partial to flashlights and knives. But we as K9 cops get all sorts of gizmos shown to us to make our dogs strong or faster...almost bionic. When I first started working a dog, I thought it was the coolest thing to deploy the dog via the remote door opener. Our first door pop was pretty good because I was already out of the car and I needed him so I hit the button and he actually broke the door off the piston to get out and I was really stoke… Continue

The importance of realistic training for American Law Enforcement Dogs

We have all seen the video's, the dog that doesn't engage a suspect. I'll tell you from first hand experience, it is a sucky thing to watch in person, especially when it is your dog. Hell, we trained for hours and to have him fail to engage on an easy bite was embarrassing. And to top all of that, we already had several street bites. But they way the administration handled it was dead wrong. Instead of immediately addressing the issue with training, they took the dog out of service. Now that I a… Continue

Disbanding of a K9 unit

I'm not talking about just one K9 team, I'm talking four K9 teams. Having a fire sale with the dogs too. All this to try and save some money. I understand the need to save money in these economic times, but with a bad economy comes more drug use and violent crime. K9 teams are an established part of the use of force ladder. You take that away, not only do we place officers in situations where we normally send a "replaceable" dog into, but we also are going to using a higher level of force on sus… Continue

Training imported dogs for American law enforcement

Ok, I know I am going to piss a few people off but I'm usually the guy poking a stick at the bee hive anyway. I am curious to get opinions about the different imported dogs and their training styles and how it fits into American Law Enforcement. I was lucky and got train with a large agency and saw dogs from everywhere. The dogs that I saw with the most issues for law enforcement were Schutzhund dogs. Excellant trackers but very equipment focused. Drop the sleeve and run away worked for me to ge… Continue

Hi, Happy Memorial Weekend. Thanks for all you do to keep us safe. Just a little update on my stuff.
The dog business is slowly getting off the ground. I'm making good contacts with working dog vendors in Europe and the U.S. I sold a Mal pup to a K9 Officer here in Sioux Ctiy. She is a little dynamo. No pics yet on my sight but some will be coming in the near future. I finish school July 16th and hope to get a full time job at a local hospital. This will enable me to apply for a small business loan to fund the purchase of more dogs. Hope to sell 3-4 to the Air Force on a trial basis to get a standing contract with them. We shall see.
Have a nice day. Brenda

What are the dates of the trial and where is it. I think last year it was at the high school. I look forward to seeing you there.

I'm thinking along your lines. I think to start off on a small scale to get my name out there and do the service dog also. I have some calls in to some assistance dog people to see if we can work something out. I think the K9 police dog donation will be needed for good PR and to show we know what we are doing. I have a professional K9 trainer lined up with an international license in bomb detection, mine detection, narcotics detection and miliitary dog experience in these areas. I think I need to be up and running and have a show & tell for the police folks. I'll do what it takes. I'm not afraid of some hard work and obstacles. I think diversifying is a good idea. Thanks. Keep you posted. I am working with a realtor to find a suitable site for the kennel. Brenda

Hello, your take on the following would be great:
a meeting with a local K9 Officer, homeland security officer, zoning officer, business manager and myself took place recently. It was very informative, but very negative. The K9 officer said he would only use police trained dogs and the homeland security officer said, "we are a tight circle and you are outside the loop", they suggested I work with service dogs used for persons with disabilities. The K9 officer said they would consider a donated dog. I am looking into K9 vendor contracts with the ATF and the Lackland Air Force Base MWD program.
My thoughts are to go ahead and start up on a small scale and look into assistance dog work with a limited amount of K9 dogs to sell to the Air Force or ATF. I had heard it was difficult. Thanks. Brenda

Hey, got some questions for you and it seems you may have answers. I currently have 2 dogs. One 3 year old GSD cert in tracking with a local SAR team and I recently got my new pup a 10 week old Mal. I would like to go more the "patrol" route with her. She is fairly nutty, very ball driven right now but would like to know some puppy tips? Got any?
