Hi Beth, I use about 1/3 Royal Canin mixed with two other feeds at a ration of 1/3 - 1/3- 1/3. Even when I fed it alone it was a good food. If you're looking for something without corn, wheat or beet pulp try FROMM Family Adult Gold. Its base protei…

Just to add, I found the Royal Canin helped me maintain Xena's weight better than the ProPlan - which puts weight on far too easily, if you're not careful.

Hi Beth. I used Royal Canin German Shepherd 24 for a few years. I found it excellent. Good protein release, solid stools etc. Appeared to be enjoyed by my dog, although she does have a good appetite, so that's no real recommendation. In all seriousn…

I need something that will keep her at a good weight as well because unlike most shepherds she is very stocky so she gains weight more rapidly. Does anyone use Canin Royal? I hear that is one of the best but its also $50 for only a 36lb bag. If anyone has any suggestions I would really appreciat… Continue

Hi again Beth,
Couple of things that I forgot to mention. One is when looking at a new food product, check out the moisture content on the Analysis portion of the bag. Cost of a product is partially based on the extra drying cost at the factory and the extra shipping weight to the distributor. So a higher cost high moisture product may not be the best. Use dry weight / lb. to determine how much your paying. I think H2O is about 6 lb. / gal. Water is cheap so add it at home. Pur Pro Plan is 12%, Eucanuba GSD is 10%, and Royal Canin is 10%.

The Second is that if the product contains Egg, be careful that it isn't Spray dried as it is only the White and that contains high levels of Avidin which binds the available Biotin in the food. Whole Egg is OK. Biotin deficiency is like an allergy in mild form. More severe cases create poor coat, especially along the back and base of the tail. Watery eyes and dry brittle lifeless discolored hair around the eyes is a more advanced symptom.
