The problem with the CBP training program, and actually all federal detection programs, is that they are importing dogs that have some sport dog training i.e. "bitework". These dogs may not have what it takes for whatever sport they were being train…

Obedient training course for handler?

Hi Y'all,

I am fighting to keep my assigned positive response K-9 from being fired. To make a long story short, there was an incident at Dulles airport, regarding a child being bit by a (CBP) mali and guess what I have, a mali. She given a temperment test, which she passed, however, when I went to praise her for a job WELL DONE, she went high for her praise, as we've always done. Meanwhile, this freaked out the powers to be and I was placed on obedient training remedial for 30 days. No

HELP!!!

Does any body out there know how to keep a 52 pound Malinois from knocking down a concrete wall? My mali bounces against her kennel wall and I don't know how to stop her. To give a little background, my working dog stays at a civilian kennel and she has already knocked down her outside run's concrete wall. My problem; the kennel owner saw a 1" swift between my dog and another dogs run (she has already rebuilt the outside run), now I'm afraid she (owner) might kick us out, even if she has a contr… Continue

Actually this morning was the true test, chilly weather! She passed! However, I have learned a trick or two, if you give her something to keep in her mouth, she's fine. Now, whenever I open her kennel, I toss her a kong and she's happy as can be. She still bounces back and forth in her run and the constant barking, but I have been "bite free" for 3 weeks!!!!!!! OOPS, she did nip my thigh last week, but she was going for her reward, a towel. So, yes, she is getting much better. I had been off for 5-6 days, so when I returned, iI was a little weary, wondering if she was only to be pissed, but she was fine.

Great idea, especailly with winter coming! I will definitely do with with one of the more experienced handlers. Thank you, we will start tomorrow. I'm not allowd to use a muzzle, policy, but she does take corrections pretty good. Thank your handlers for me and will keep you informed. Again thank, Becky

I talked to some of our senior handlers today at training and they thought that Vela probably has had some sort of bite training and she thinks that the jackets/gloves are bite equipment. They suggested that you get another handler to wear the stuff she shows interest in walk your girl around them. You can do this in muzzle or not depending on how hard she trys to get to the other handler. She should walk with you in a heal and not break but if she does you correct her. repeat until she heals correctly. this may take some time (weeks/ Months) but they say you should be able to correct this. But you will always have to watch her. they don't think she'll ever lose the drive to bite but you can control it with solid corrcetions when she's wrong and alot of praise when she's right. Hope this helps. Let me know. Stay safe. Matt
